HABIGANJ, Aug 02(V7N) — A sense of fear and concern has spread in Madhabpur Upazila of Habiganj after a BNP leader and 12 others allegedly received death threats through a mailed package containing burial cloth and threatening letters.
The recipients include Mir Khorshed Alam, chairman of Adair Union Parishad and vice-president of Madhabpur Upazila BNP. According to the complaint, a registered parcel reached the union council office through Madhabpur Post Office on Wednesday (July 29).
After opening the parcel, the chairman reportedly found 13 separate envelopes addressed to different individuals. Each envelope contained a typed threat letter and a piece of burial cloth.
The letters allegedly warned the recipients of serious consequences and included threats against Mir Khorshed Alam and several others. The messages also referred to the upcoming Union Parishad election and contained threats of violence and criminal activities, according to the complaint.
The letters were signed in the name of “Conscious Youth Society,” and one note reportedly stated that a sample of burial cloth had been sent in advance.
Following the incident, Mir Khorshed Alam filed a general diary (GD) with Madhabpur Police Station and informed the district police authorities. He also posted on social media urging the sender to contact him directly.
Shafiqul Rahman Shafik, an entrepreneur at the Union Digital Centre, said the parcel contained multiple threatening letters and pieces of burial cloth, creating concern among local residents.
Mir Khorshed Alam said he had never intentionally harmed anyone and urged anyone with complaints against him to communicate directly rather than resorting to threats.
Madhabpur BNP General Secretary Hamidur Rahman condemned the incident, calling for a fair investigation and immediate arrest of those responsible.
Madhabpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sohel Rana said a general diary had been registered and the parcel and letters were being investigated. He added that police were working to identify those involved, and initial findings suggested that the parcel was sent from Nabiganj. Legal action would be taken after the investigation, he said.
