PABNA, Aug 02 (V7N) — A government-funded solar-powered irrigation project in Pabna has become inoperative before entering full service after key equipment was reportedly stolen, raising concerns over the protection of public infrastructure and the effective use of public funds.
The project, implemented by the Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) in Lakshmipur village of Atgharia Upazila, was designed to use water from the restored Ichamati River to irrigate nearby farmland. Construction began in November 2023 and was completed in May 2024 at a cost of approximately Tk 42.8 lakh.
According to local sources, solar panels, batteries, electrical cables and other essential components were stolen before the system became operational, rendering the irrigation pumps unusable. Similar incidents were also reported at two other solar-powered irrigation sites near the Ichamati River.
Local farmers said the project has failed to provide the expected irrigation benefits. Some also questioned the choice of location, arguing that installing the pumps in areas with higher demand for irrigation would have produced greater benefits.
Residents have called for a thorough investigation into the theft, improved security for government infrastructure, and the restoration of the irrigation system so farmers can benefit from the project as originally intended.
Saifunnahar, Executive Engineer of the Barind Multipurpose Development Authority in Pabna, confirmed that officials are aware of the theft and said the matter is being treated seriously. She added that appropriate measures would be taken following the investigation.
