JHALOKATHI, Aug 17 (V7N) — National Fisheries Fortnight 2026 was celebrated in Jhalokathi on Sunday with a range of programmes, including fish fry release, a rally, a discussion meeting and an award ceremony.

The fortnight is being observed under the slogan “A Self-Reliant Nation Through Silver Fish, Bangladesh First”.

MP Israt Sultana Elen Bhutto released fish fry into the pond at the Jhalokathi Superintendent of Police’s Office in the morning.

The opening ceremony was then held in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office. Following the inauguration, a rally was brought out and paraded through the main streets of the town before ending at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office.

A discussion meeting was subsequently held at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, chaired by Deputy Commissioner Md Momin Uddin. District Fisheries Officer Md Enamul Haque delivered the welcome address.

District Council Administrator Advocate Md Shahadat Hossain, acting Superintendent of Police Mamun Al Islam, Civil Surgeon Dr Mohammad Humayun Kabir and Upazila Nirbahi Officer Segufta Mehnaz were among those present as special guests, along with relevant officials.

The discussion focused on various aspects of developing the fisheries sector, increasing fish production, ensuring access to safe and nutritious fish, and improving the livelihoods of fishermen and others dependent on the sector.

Awards were later distributed among individuals and organisations for their outstanding contributions to the fisheries sector.

Various programmes will be organised across Jhalokathi from Aug 16 to 18 as part of National Fisheries Fortnight 2026.
