Dhaka, Jan 09 (V7N)— BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has expressed concern over what he termed a "sick competition" to remain in power, following the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government. He made the remarks during the unveiling of the book Rajbandir Jabanbandi at the BNP Chairperson's office in Gulshan on Thursday afternoon.

Speaking to party members and journalists, Mirza Fakhrul emphasised the need for unity, stating, "Since Sheikh Hasina fled, we don't know why we haven't been able to restore trust among ourselves. An unhealthy competition has started to survive in power. Stability can only be achieved through unity."

Mirza Fakhrul also reflected on BNP's legacy of reforms initiated under the party's founder, Shaheed Ziaur Rahman. He credited Zia for transforming the political and economic landscape of Bangladesh, saying, "Ziaur Rahman reformed the one-party regime into a multi-party democracy, introduced press freedom, and transitioned from a closed socialist economy to a free market economy."

He lamented the lack of promotion of BNP's achievements, urging members to reconnect with the public and highlight the party's historical contributions, including the 19-point programme, which he described as "the biggest reform in Bangladesh's history."

Addressing internal divisions within the party, the BNP Secretary General urged members to overcome differences and work together. "Disunity among ourselves is regrettable. We must focus on restoring trust and unity to achieve stability and move forward," he added.

The event was attended by journalist Shafiq Rehman, BNP Chairperson's advisor Ismail Jamiullah, Krishak Dal General Secretary Shahidul Islam Babul, and other party leaders and supporters.

The comments come as BNP navigates a politically volatile environment, with calls for reforms and unity becoming increasingly urgent in the post-Sheikh Hasina era.
