Dhaka, Mar 16 (V7N) – Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has stated that the European Union (EU) will assist Bangladesh in the electoral process by coordinating with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The support will focus on training election agents, polling officers, and presiding officers, as well as providing training for political leaders.
The remarks came after a meeting between a European Union delegation and the Election Commission (EC) at the Agargaon Election Commission Secretariat on Sunday (March 16) morning. The EU delegation included five members, led by EU Ambassador Michael Miller.
A workshop will be held next month, where civil society representatives will participate.
The EU has expressed its willingness to contribute to Bangladesh’s democratic development.
The Election Commission (EC) aims to ensure a transparent and acceptable election process.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, CEC Nasir Uddin said,
“We are working in a very transparent process. We want an acceptable election. We are not hiding anything. Forget about the irregularities that have occurred in past elections. We will work to organize fair elections.
After the meeting, EU Ambassador Michael Miller emphasized the EU’s support for Bangladesh’s democratic transition.
“Bangladesh is going through a transitional period. I told the EC that the EU is with the EC in the process of returning to a democratic way. We support the reforms of this government. We hope that there will be international-quality elections.”
The EU’s engagement with the Election Commission signals a broader commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and electoral transparency in Bangladesh.
