Dhaka, Aug 22 (V7N) – A photo exhibition and discussion event was held on Friday in front of the South Plaza of the National Parliament on Manik Mia Avenue, organized by "Mayer Dak"—an organization representing the families of victims of enforced disappearances in Bangladesh.
The event drew attention to the rising number of enforced disappearances and alleged extrajudicial killings in the country. Speaking as the chief guest, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir strongly criticized the current interim government for its failure to address the issue and deliver justice to the families affected.
He stated that the government has failed to establish an effective commission on enforced disappearances and has not initiated any public hearings. "They will have to be held accountable for this. The families of the disappeared deserve transparency and justice," he said.
He further expressed hope that even this administration would eventually be compelled to identify those responsible for these crimes. "Crimes such as abduction, torture, murder, and other human rights violations should be met with the highest punishment under the law—death penalty. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is responsible for every case of enforced disappearance and killing. But there is no reason for despair; she must face justice on Bangladeshi soil, and receive the maximum legal punishment," he added.
Reaffirming BNP’s political stance, Alamgir emphasized that the party stands firmly with the oppressed and persecuted. "BNP wants elections. We want justice for all victims of state violence and a rapid judicial process to ensure accountability," he concluded.
The event was attended by victims’ families, civil society representatives, and human rights activists, many of whom displayed portraits and personal stories of their missing loved ones.
The organizers demanded the immediate formation of an independent investigation body under international observation, and called for an end to impunity regarding human rights abuses in Bangladesh.
