Sylhet, Sept 7 (V7N) – Leaders and supporters of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh held a protest rally in Sylhet on Friday demanding the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible for the murder of prominent scholar and social worker Maulana Mustaq Ahmad Gazi.

Maulana Gazi, central leader of Jamiat and vice president of Sunamganj district, was found brutally killed and his body dumped in a river late Tuesday night. The killing of the respected religious figure, who was known for his simple lifestyle and advocacy for prisoners and the oppressed, sparked outrage across the community.

The rally, organized by Sylhet Metropolitan Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, started from the Bandar Bazar party office and proceeded through major city streets, concluding at Court Point. The event was presided over by acting city president Maulana Nizam Uddin and moderated by general secretary Abdul Malik Chowdhury. Key speakers included Jamiat’s central joint secretary Maulana Khalilur Rahman, city vice president Principal Mahmudul Hasan, Maulana Mujibur Rahman Kasemi, Maulana Mosaddiq Ahmad, and vice president of South District Maulana Nazrul Islam, among others.

During the rally, leaders criticized the administration for inaction, noting that five days had passed since the murder with little assistance to the family or the party. They warned that unless the killers were arrested and brought to justice, Jamiat would launch intensified protest actions.

Organizers emphasized the need for swift legal action to set a precedent and ensure the safety of scholars and social activists in the region.
