Dhaka, Jan 25 (V7N) — Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has warned that extortion will not be tolerated under any circumstances, calling it “worse than begging,” and said those involved would be shown a red card if they fail to abandon the practice.
He made the remarks while addressing an election rally at the Kajla Bridge area of Jatrabari in the capital on Sunday.
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said that to uproot fascism from its roots, the ‘Yes’ vote must win in the February 12 elections. “We no longer want rotten politics. The youth of this country have already rejected it. They want a Bangladesh free from corruption, fascism and hegemony,” he said.
Referring to extortion, the Jamaat Ameer said, “A new profession has emerged in the country—extortion. Those involved must return to the good path.” He added that Jamaat would ensure legal means of income for those abandoning extortion, but warned that continued involvement would result in strict action. “We will neither do extortion ourselves nor allow anyone else to do it,” he said.
On education, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman criticized successive governments for neglecting the Qaumi Madrasa education system. He said that if state support is provided to general educational institutions, Qaumi Madrasas should not be excluded. “If Jamaat comes to power, we will sit with Qaumi Madrasa policymakers and ensure their development with dignity, based on their opinions,” he added.
Addressing civic issues, the Jamaat Ameer said that if Jamaat fails to resolve waterlogging, mayors and councillors would be held directly accountable. He said public representatives who fail to fulfill their responsibilities would be dismissed, and pledged to ensure clean and navigable waterways.
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman also emphasized women’s participation in national development, promising safe employment opportunities for women. “Security for women will be ensured both at home and outside. Evening bus services will be introduced for working women,” he said.
At the rally, the Jamaat Ameer sought votes for Syed Zainul Abedin, candidate for Dhaka-4, and Mohammad Kamal Hossain, candidate for Dhaka-5 constituencies.
