Gazipur, Mar 16 (V7N) — Opposition Leader and Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, has emphasized that education should focus on developing character rather than merely preparing students for examinations.
He made the remarks while addressing an Iftar Mahfil and reception organized by the Alumni Association of Tamirul Millat Madrasa in Tongi, Gazipur, on Monday afternoon.
“Research is the lifeblood of educational institutions. Teachers are the engine, and students are the raw materials of that engine,” he said. “But students today are overly burdened with textbooks. We want them to become fighters for their own development, not just for exams.”
Dr. Rahman stressed that there is no alternative to the pursuit of knowledge, urging students to return to books and fully embrace the guidance of their teachers. “Education is the backbone of a nation; everyone must receive its proper benefits,” he added.
Referring to early Islamic history, he noted that formal institutions did not exist during the time of Prophet Muhammad, yet the pursuit of knowledge remained strong through memorization of the Quran and understanding of the Sunnah.
He also called on former students of the institution—now in teaching and administrative roles—not to forget their roots. “If you see shortcomings in your institution, do not criticize; rather, work to improve them,” he said.
Highlighting the role of moral values, the Jamaat Ameer said a society becomes more beautiful with an increase in righteous and ethical individuals. He expressed hope that Tamirul Millat Madrasa would continue to produce talented, principled, patriotic, and respectful individuals.
