Dhaka, Oct 29 (V7N)- Opposition leader and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has said that no initiative or decision concerning the Matarbari deep-sea port will be acceptable if it compromises Bangladesh’s national interests, security or geographical sovereignty.

In a post on his verified Facebook page on Thursday, October 29, he said the people would not accept any decision that undermines the country’s interests. He also called for transparency regarding developments surrounding the Matarbari deep-sea port.

Referring to previous initiatives involving transit facilities and transport corridors, Shafiqur Rahman argued that such arrangements had been presented as being in Bangladesh’s interest, but the country had not received the expected benefits.

He stressed that Bangladesh’s sovereignty, security and national interests must take priority in its relations with all countries, including Japan, China and other friendly nations.

The Jamaat-e-Islami chief said the government had a responsibility to safeguard the country’s interests and security, adding that the public did not want to see any failure or compromise in fulfilling that responsibility.
