Dhaka, Jun 21 (V7N) – Millions of people across the globe are celebrating World Father's Day on Sunday (June 21), paying tribute to fathers for their lifelong love, sacrifice and unwavering support.

A father is often regarded as a symbol of strength, protection and unconditional love. While the word "father" differs across languages and cultures, the bond between a father and child remains universal. Every year, Father's Day is observed on the third Sunday of June in many countries to recognize the invaluable role fathers play in their children's lives.

On this special occasion, families celebrate by spending quality time together, presenting gifts, sharing heartfelt messages and expressing gratitude to their fathers both in person and on social media.

The origins of Father's Day date back more than a century. According to historical records, the first Father's Day observance took place on July 5, 1908, at a church in Fairmont, West Virginia, in the United States.

However, the person most widely credited with establishing the modern Father's Day celebration is Sonora Smart Dodd of Washington State. Inspired by the dedication of her father, William Smart, who single-handedly raised six children after the death of his wife, Dodd campaigned for a day to honor fathers just as Mother's Day honored mothers.

Her efforts led to the first officially recognized Father's Day celebration on June 19, 1910. The observance gradually gained popularity across the United States.

In 1913, a bill was introduced in the U.S. Congress proposing Father's Day as a national holiday. Former President Calvin Coolidge publicly supported the initiative in 1924. Later, in 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued a presidential proclamation designating the third Sunday of June as Father's Day. The observance was subsequently embraced by many countries around the world.

Beyond gifts and celebrations, Father's Day serves as a reminder of the enduring contributions fathers make to their families. The occasion encourages people to express their appreciation, cherish precious moments with their fathers and acknowledge the countless sacrifices they make throughout their lives.

For many, the simplest words—"Dad, I love you"—remain the most meaningful gift that can be offered on this special day.
