Mexico City, Jun 12 (V7N) – Backed by the deafening support of 80,824 passionate home fans at the historic Estadio Azteca, Mexico launched their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with an impressive 2-0 victory over South Africa in the tournament's opening match.
Seeking to erase the disappointment of their group-stage exit in Qatar, Mexico, known as El Tricolor, delivered a dominant performance on home soil. The match, however, was marked not only by two goals but also by three red cards in a dramatic contest.
Mexico started aggressively and nearly took the lead in the fifth minute when striker Raúl Jiménez unleashed a powerful effort that was brilliantly saved by South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
The breakthrough came just four minutes later. After winning possession in midfield, Mexico launched a swift attack and winger Julián Quiñones calmly slotted the ball beneath Williams to send the home crowd into celebration and give Mexico a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute.
Mexico continued to dominate the first half, creating several opportunities. Jiménez saw a header denied, while another effort from Quiñones struck the post, leaving the score 1-0 at halftime.
The game took a decisive turn early in the second half when South African midfielder Spefelo Sithole was shown a straight red card for bringing down Jiménez as he advanced toward goal, reducing South Africa to ten men.
Coach Javier Aguirre introduced 17-year-old midfielder Gilberto Mora in the 67th minute, and the youngster made an immediate impact. Just one minute after coming on, Mexico doubled their advantage. A precise cross from Roberto Alvarado found Jiménez, who headed home to make it 2-0 and effectively seal the victory.
The closing stages produced further drama. South African substitute Themba Joane received a red card while attempting to halt another Mexican attack. Moments before the final whistle, Mexican defender César Montes was also sent off after an altercation, reducing the hosts to ten men as well.
Despite the late disciplinary incidents, Mexico comfortably held on to secure all three points and make a winning start to their World Cup journey. The victory places the hosts at the top of Group A and provides a major confidence boost as they continue their quest for success on home soil.
