Gilgit-Baltistan, Nov 13 (V7N) — At least 14 people lost their lives when a bus carrying wedding guests plunged into a river in northern Pakistan, AFP reported. The accident occurred as the bus, en route to the bride and groom's hometown, veered off course and tumbled into icy waters.

The tragic incident left the bride as the sole survivor. According to Wazir Asad Ali, a rescue official from Gilgit-Baltistan, the bus was carrying 25 people, and 14 bodies have been recovered. Ten passengers remain missing as rescue operations continue. The bride, who was taken to a hospital in Gilgit, is reported to be out of danger.

Nayek Alam, a senior police officer, informed AFP that the accident occurred when the driver, reportedly speeding, lost control on a sharp bend. The freezing river temperature further complicates recovery efforts, likely raising the death toll.

The groom's family, who traveled over 500 kilometers from Punjab for the wedding, were on their way back when the tragedy struck. Pakistan’s roads are often plagued by inadequate infrastructure, mismanagement, and poor driver training, leading to frequent and devastating accidents.
