Iran Blasts: On the anniversary of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani's death, two explosions were audible close to his grave.
On the eve of the anniversary of the US drone strike that killed Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani in Iraq, the country witnessed two explosive explosions close to his grave that left over 100 people dead and several others injured.
The chief of Iran's Revolutionary Guards' overseas operations is buried in Kerman, southern Iran, and there was a "Huge explosion heard near Saheb al-Zaman Mosque." Shortly after, local media in the area added, "A second explosion was heard near Saheb al-Zaman Mosque." AFP reported quoting them.
According to Reuters, Reza Fallah, the commander of the Red Crescent rescuers in Kerman province, stated, "Our rapid reaction teams are removing the injured... However, waves of people are obstructing traffic.
What the president of Iran stated:
"Undoubtedly, the perpetrators... of this cowardly act will soon be identified and punished for their heinous act by the capable security and law enforcement forces," said Iran's president Ebrahim Raisi in response to the blasts. The nation's adversaries ought to be aware that such acts are incapable of upending the Iranian people's unwavering resolve."
What state TV in Iran said about the explosions :
The explosion was heard next to Qasem Soleimani's grave, according to Iranian official TV, but it did not specify what caused it. The live feed showed thousands of mourners taking part in the death anniversary, and it said that some people were hurt in a stampede that followed the explosives. On-site ambulances were also observed.
While a local official was cited by Iranian state media as saying "it is not yet clear whether the explosions were caused by gas cylinders or a terrorist attack," Nournews claimed that "several gas canisters exploded on the road leading to the cemetery."
Within fifteen minutes, explosions were heard in the Kerman province in the center, according to Bloomberg. The deputy governor of the province was quoted by the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency as saying that it's still unclear if the explosions were the result of a gas explosion or a "terrorist attack."
Qasem Soleimani is who?
Even though Qasem Soleimani was killed by a US drone strike just outside of Baghdad airport, he is still highly regarded in Iran. He oversaw the overseas operations division of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, known as the Quds Force. Fears of a direct military conflict between Iran and the US increased after his death in 2020.
