Uttar Pradesh, Nov 25 (V7N) — Tensions in Uttar Pradesh flared again as a clash between locals and police in the Shahi Jama Masjid area of Sambhal resulted in the deaths of four people and left many others injured, including at least 30 policemen. Following the incident, schools in the area have been closed, and internet services have been suspended to prevent further unrest.
The violence erupted on Sunday during a court-ordered survey of the mosque, believed to have been built during the Mughal period. Local Hindus claim that the mosque was constructed after demolishing a temple, a matter that has been the subject of a protracted legal dispute. The recent survey order reignited tensions, leading to a confrontation between locals and the survey team, accompanied by security personnel.
The situation escalated when locals began pelting stones at the survey team and police. In response, police fired shots, resulting in casualties. According to DIG Muniraj Ji of the Moradabad range, three deaths were confirmed by Sunday night, with another individual succumbing to injuries later.
Authorities have arrested at least 20 people in connection with the violence. To prevent the situation from deteriorating further, internet services have been suspended, and police are actively pursuing those involved in the unrest.
The DK Foundation, an organisation focused on justice and freedom, has filed a petition with India’s National Human Rights Commission, alleging bias in police actions. The petition claims that the police targeted members of the Muslim community, with three of the deceased being Muslim. The organisation has called for an investigation into what it termed "indiscriminate firing."
The survey of religious sites has been a contentious issue in India, often inflaming communal tensions. The Shahi Jama Masjid case is one of several disputes where historical claims have led to legal and social unrest, underscoring the fragility of communal harmony in certain regions of the country.
Authorities remain on high alert, with increased security measures in place to maintain order in Sambhal and surrounding areas.
