Washington, D.C., Dec 30, (V7N) - U.S. President Joe Biden has paid tribute to former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 100. Biden described Carter as "an extraordinary leader, statesman, and humanitarian," highlighting his lifetime of work dedicated to peace, civil rights, human rights, and helping the less fortunate.
Biden praised Carter for his efforts to eradicate disease, promote free and fair elections, house the homeless, and always advocate for those who are most in need. "He saved, lifted, and changed the lives of people all across the globe," Biden said in a statement.
Carter, who became the longest-living former president, will be honored with an official state funeral in Washington, D.C. Biden reflected on his own close relationship with Carter, calling him "a dear friend" and noting that Carter had been the first sitting senator to endorse him in 1976, when Carter ran for president. Carter later supported Biden in 2020, describing him as a "loyal and dedicated friend."
Carter was unable to attend Biden's inauguration in 2021 due to health reasons, marking the first time he missed a presidential handoff ceremony.
In his statement, Biden expressed admiration for the Carter marriage, calling it "the definition of partnership" and noting the humility and patriotism of both Carter and his late wife, Rosalynn, who passed away in November 2023.
Biden urged Americans to study Carter's life and principles, emphasizing his faith, humility, and purpose-driven existence. "He showed that we are a great nation because we are a good people—decent and honorable, courageous and compassionate, humble and strong," Biden concluded.
