London, Jan 08, (V7N) - Chinese fast-fashion giant Shein has come under fire from British lawmakers for failing to provide clarity on its use of cotton sourced from China. Questions have been raised about Shein’s supply chain transparency amid growing global concerns over forced labor allegations tied to the Xinjiang region, a major cotton-producing area in China.

During a recent parliamentary inquiry, Shein was criticized for its lack of detailed responses regarding its cotton supply chain. Lawmakers expressed frustration, stating that the company’s silence left them “in the dark” about its practices.

The scrutiny comes as global brands face increasing pressure to disclose and address potential links to forced labor in Xinjiang, where rights groups and governments, including the UK, have raised concerns about human rights abuses against Uyghurs and other minority groups.

Shein, known for its low-cost clothing and rapid production cycles, has previously stated that it abides by ethical sourcing practices. However, its reluctance to fully address concerns related to cotton sourcing has cast doubt on those claims.

British lawmakers emphasized the need for greater accountability from Shein, particularly as the brand continues to expand its global market presence. They urged the company to provide clear evidence of compliance with ethical labor and sourcing standards.

The inquiry remains ongoing, with further hearings expected to delve deeper into Shein’s supply chain practices and potential links to human rights violations.
