Pabna, Feb 17, (V7N) – Akhtar Hossain (45), the UP Chairman and a teacher from Chatmohar Upazila in Pabna, was brutally attacked by his opponents, resulting in a fractured leg. The incident occurred on Sunday, February 16,around 9:30 AM in the Char Sengram area of Bilchalon Union. Chairman Akhtar, who supports the Awami League, has no official political affiliation. The attackers, however, are reportedly BNP sympathizers.
Chairman Akhtar Hossain, who is currently receiving treatment at Pabna General Hospital, explained that the assault stemmed from a longstanding dispute with local figures Zafar Sardar, Jinnah Sardar, and Munjil Hossain over an Eri scheme.
According to Akhtar, they had been extorting money from him and attempted to kill him after he refused to participate in the scheme and pay the extortion.
"I was riding my motorcycle from home to the market when Zafar and his group attacked me, fracturing my right leg and injuring various parts of my body," Chairman Akhtar claimed.
Zafar Sardar, one of the accused, denied his involvement, stating he was not present during the incident. "I heard that the chairman was attacked due to a previous issue, and nothing related to the scheme happened. After I learned of the attack, I went to the site to clear the crowd and prevent a mob lynching," he explained.
Another accused, Jinnah Sardar, also denied involvement, stating, "I was told that the chairman had kept the fine money in a case involving a woman hurt in an accident six months ago, but he didn't give the woman any money. Locals then attacked him, and I intervened to save him."
Regarding the Eri scheme dispute, Jinnah claimed, "Akhtar Hossain has been occupying our land for years under the scheme. Now, with the change in political power, we have reclaimed our land."
Nayan Kumar Sarkar, Inspector (Investigation) at Chatmohar Police Station, confirmed that they had heard about the incident but had not received an official complaint until 10 PM on Sunday. He assured that once a complaint is filed, they will conduct an inquiry and take legal action.
