London, Jan 09 (V7N) — The United Kingdom is preparing for an intense winter as temperatures are forecast to drop to as low as minus 20°C across England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. Meteorologists are also warning of heavy snowfall and potential flooding.
The Met Office has issued an "amber cold" alert, signalling significant risks due to extreme weather. Over 150 flood warnings, including 79 in England alone, are in effect until Sunday.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has warned that the severe cold could lead to increased deaths and place additional strain on healthcare services, particularly for the elderly and vulnerable populations. Dr. Agostinho Sousa from UKHSA urged people to check on friends, family, and neighbours, stating, “The extreme cold can increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and chest infections.”
On Wednesday, temperatures plunged to minus 7°C in Tulloch Bridge, Scotland, minus 6.9°C in Catesbridge, Northern Ireland, and minus 8.4°C in Shap, Cumbria. In southern England, Benson, Oxfordshire, recorded minus 6.1°C overnight.
The UKHSA recommends proactive monitoring of high-risk individuals and collaboration between healthcare providers and the Met Office to issue early warnings. Residents are advised to prepare for the cold by ensuring homes are adequately heated and taking precautions while travelling.
With predictions of heavy snow and freezing temperatures, the UK faces potential disruptions to daily life, including transport delays and increased demand for emergency services. Authorities are urging the public to stay informed and take necessary precautions.
