Seoul, Mar 07 (V7N)- A South Korean court has canceled the arrest warrant for impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol, allowing his release after more than two months in detention. The Seoul Central District Court issued the ruling on Friday (March 7), citing procedural delays in the prosecution's case, Reuters reported.
Yoon was arrested in January on allegations linked to his impeachment. However, his legal team filed a motion last month arguing that the prosecutors failed to file charges within the required timeframe, making his ongoing detention unlawful.
In a statement, the Seoul Central District Court said, "Considering all the arguments, the charges against Yoon were filed after the time limit for his detention had expired." The court further stated that his release was necessary to ensure transparency in the trial process.
The cancellation of Yoon's arrest warrant marks a significant turn in South Korea’s ongoing political and legal turmoil, as his impeachment and subsequent detention had sparked heated debates. The decision is expected to influence the next phase of legal proceedings against the former president.
