Kyiv, April 11 (V7N) – Technical consultations between the United States and Ukraine regarding a potential minerals deal will begin in Washington on Friday. Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanishyna confirmed on Thursday that the talks would not interfere with Ukraine’s other financial commitments.

U.S. President Donald Trump is pushing for a bilateral minerals deal, viewing it as part of his efforts to end Russia's war in Ukraine. The deal is also seen as a way to recover some of the billions of dollars the U.S. has spent on military aid to Ukraine, although that aid is not a loan.

Stefanishyna, speaking to reporters in Brussels, emphasized that any potential deal would not affect Ukraine’s existing financial obligations. “Nothing can be negotiated with Ukraine in a way that will undermine the existing commitments and obligations Ukraine has, including financial ones,” she said. “This is not something open to negotiation.”

The U.S. administration has proposed a more detailed draft for the deal, aiming for privileged access to Ukraine’s mineral resources. According to a government document, Ukraine has set aside $2.7 million to consult on the deal and protect its national interests.
