India, May 5 (V7N) - The Indian government is awaiting final approval to establish 16 new battalions under the Border Security Force (BSF), which will include nearly 17,000 additional personnel. The move is aimed at bolstering the country’s border security, particularly along the frontiers with Pakistan and Bangladesh.
According to reports by Press Trust of India (PTI), the proposed expansion has already received policy-level approval. Once finalized, it is expected to significantly enhance the BSF’s operational capabilities.
As part of the broader strategic plan, two new ‘Forward Headquarters’ will be set up under the BSF's Western and Eastern Commands — one focused on the Pakistan border and the other on the Bangladesh frontier.
This expansion comes in response to increasing security demands across India’s extensive borders and is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to modernize and strengthen its paramilitary forces.
Defense analysts note that the additional battalions and forward bases will improve response times, surveillance capabilities, and overall readiness in sensitive border areas.
