Bogra, Apr 27 (V7N) — A public notice has been issued to declare Bogra as a City Corporation while keeping the boundaries of the existing 21 wards of Bogra Municipality intact. Deputy Commissioner Hosna Afroza issued the notice on Sunday (April 27).

The notice states, “As per Sub-rule (2) of Rule 5 of the Local Government (City Corporation) Establishment Rules-2010, this public notice is issued with the aim of establishing Bogra City Corporation with the areas included in the existing mouzas of Bogra Municipality. Any opinion or objection regarding this must be submitted within 30 days of the publication of the notice as per Sub-rule (4) of Rule 5. No submissions will be accepted after that period.”

Sources in the district administration mentioned that if Bogra Municipality or any individual wishes to submit objections or opinions, they must do so in writing to the Deputy Commissioner’s office within the next month. Following the resolution of public feedback, the final report will be sent to the Local Government Department within 45 working days for further action toward the establishment of the City Corporation.

Earlier, on February 24, the Deputy Commissioner submitted a formal proposal to the Local Government Department under the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives to upgrade Bogra Municipality—established in 1876—into a City Corporation. Responding to that proposal, the department has now taken formal steps toward the upgrade.

Speaking to reporters, Deputy Commissioner Hosna Afroza explained that under current law, a municipal area must have a minimum population of four lakh to qualify for City Corporation status. Bogra Municipality’s permanent population is approximately 4.5 lakh. Additionally, the required population density is 3,000 people per square kilometer, whereas Bogra exceeds this with 5,843 people per square kilometer.

Bogra Municipality achieved 'A' class status in 1981. Its area expanded to 14.76 square kilometers in 2000 and to 69.56 square kilometers in 2004. With a current area of about 70 square kilometers across 21 wards, it comfortably meets the minimum area requirement of 25 square kilometers for a City Corporation.
