Nairobi, Nov 02 (V7N)- At least 21 people have been killed and 30 others remain missing after a massive landslide struck the Marakwet East region of western Kenya early Saturday morning, local authorities confirmed.
The disaster occurred in the Marakwet East Constituency following heavy monsoon rains that have battered the region for several days. Kenya’s Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen said that among the injured, 25 critically wounded victims were airlifted to Eldoret Hospital, while those with minor injuries received treatment locally.
Rescue teams worked throughout Saturday (November 1) in difficult conditions, but operations were suspended after nightfall due to heavy rainfall and poor visibility. Authorities have said that search and rescue efforts will resume at dawn on Sunday (November 2).
Officials have urged residents living near seasonal riverbanks and landslide-prone hillsides to move to safer areas immediately, warning that further landslides could occur if the rains continue.
