Guwahati, Dec 25 (V7N)- The West Karbi Anglong district of India’s northeastern state of Assam has been gripped by continuous protests and violent clashes for several days, leaving at least two people dead and more than 50 others injured, according to reports published by multiple Indian media outlets.

Most of the injured are members of the security forces deployed to control the unrest. Amid escalating violence, several houses in and around Kheroni Bazar were set ablaze. Protesters also torched multiple cars and motorcycles, creating widespread panic in the area.

Despite the imposition of curfew, clashes between groups continued, with tribals and local residents reportedly engaging in violent confrontations. In response to the deteriorating law-and-order situation, authorities have suspended internet services across the affected areas and deployed the army to assist civil administration.

The violence reportedly stems from a long-standing dispute over ancestral and communal land ownership. Tribal groups allege that outsiders have illegally occupied their traditional land. Conversely, members of the Bengali and Bihari communities claim they have come under intensified attacks following the spread of rumors labeling them as Bangladeshis.

Tensions remain high as security forces continue patrols and authorities attempt to restore calm. The situation is being closely monitored by the state administration.
