Luxembourg, Apr 22 (V7N) — The European Union has agreed to expand sanctions against Iran, according to a report by Reuters.
Sanctions linked to Hormuz tensions
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced the decision following a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg on Tuesday.
She said the new sanctions will target individuals and entities involved in the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route.
Call to strengthen naval presence
Kallas also emphasized the need to reinforce the EU’s naval mission in the Middle East to ensure maritime security.
Currently, the EU mission is focused on protecting commercial vessels from attacks by Houthi rebels in the Red Sea.
Growing international concern
The move reflects increasing concern among European nations over disruptions to global energy supply routes and escalating tensions in the region, particularly surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.
