Naypyidaw, May 01 (V7N) — Myanmar’s pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been moved from prison to house arrest, according to state media reports confirmed on Friday.
The Myanmar government announced that Suu Kyi’s sentence has been reduced by one-sixth, although it remains unclear whether she will serve the remainder of her punishment under house arrest.
Suu Kyi, who is 80 years old, has been detained since the military takeover in 2021, when the elected government was overthrown in a coup by the armed forces. Since then, she has been held in prison in the capital Naypyidaw.
She has faced multiple convictions, including charges of sedition, corruption, election fraud, and violations of the State Secrets Act, resulting in lengthy prison sentences.
The latest development comes amid continued political instability in Myanmar following years of military rule and ongoing tensions between the junta and pro-democracy groups.
