Chennai, May 10 (V7N)- In his first major policy announcement after taking oath as Chief Minister, Vijay has declared a series of welfare initiatives, including up to 200 units of free electricity for residents of Tamil Nadu.

The announcement came shortly after his swearing-in ceremony held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Sunday morning, where he officially assumed office as Chief Minister.

Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath of office, with Vijay taking the oath in Tamil amid a large gathering of supporters and political leaders.

According to reports cited by Indian media outlet NDTV, the new government’s first set of decisions includes:

  • Up to 200 units of free electricity for households

  • Formation of a special task force to combat drug-related crimes

  • Creation of a dedicated women’s safety force and emergency helpline

Addressing supporters after taking office, Vijay said he comes from a modest background and understands hardship firsthand. He described himself as “a son, brother, and younger brother of the people,” adding that his government would focus on real issues rather than “false promises.”

He emphasized that priority would be given to education, healthcare, and drinking water supply.

Vijay also alleged financial mismanagement by the previous administration led by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), claiming the state faces a debt burden of around ₹10 lakh crore.

He pledged that his government would ensure transparency and prevent misuse of public funds.

The Chief Minister also thanked alliance partners, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, as well as other supporting political groups, for their role in forming the government.

Political observers note that the emergence of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) as the single largest party in the 234-member assembly led to days of uncertainty before it secured support from multiple parties to form a coalition government with 120 MLAs.

Analysts say the initial policy announcements signal a strong focus on welfare-driven governance and social security as the new administration begins its tenure.
