Lucknow, May 14 (V7N) — At least 90 people have died following heavy rain, storms, hail, and lightning strikes in India’s most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, according to the state’s disaster management and relief department.

Reuters reported on Thursday that the deaths occurred during severe weather conditions on Wednesday.

In a social media statement, the state’s relief commissioner said 89 people were killed and 53 others injured due to storms, rain, hail, and lightning. Authorities also reported damage to 87 houses and the deaths of 114 livestock animals.

Relief officials said several victims died after trees collapsed or walls of houses fell during the storm.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath instructed officials to assist survivors and ensure financial compensation is distributed within 24 hours.

Television footage showed strong winds uprooting trees and billboards, with some crashing onto vehicles. Furniture from roadside shops was also seen being blown away amid dust and debris.

Among the worst-hit areas, 16 people died in the Varohi district due to dust storms, while nine rain-related deaths were reported in Fatehpur.

Additional fatalities were reported in Budaun, Chandauli, and Sonbhadra, with widespread damage reported across at least five districts of the state.
