New York, May 20 (V7N) — Political activity has intensified within New York’s Bangladeshi community as preparations begin for the highly anticipated election of Bangladesh Society Inc., one of the largest organizations representing expatriate Bangladeshis in the United States.

The election is expected to be held in October this year, and an election commission has already been formed to oversee the process. Although the official election schedule has yet to be announced, potential candidates and their supporters have already begun active campaigning and strategic discussions.

According to reliable community sources, the current executive committee led by Bangladesh Society President Ataur Rahman Selim and General Secretary Mohammad Ali is preparing to contest the election once again under the banner of the “Selim-Ali Panel.” Their supporters have reportedly intensified organizational activities in an effort to retain leadership of the influential community body.

At the same time, discussions are growing around several possible challengers, although no alternative full panel has officially been announced yet.

Among the most talked-about potential candidates for the president’s post are former Bangladesh Society President Azmal Hossain Kunu and former Vice President Wasi Chowdhury. For the position of general secretary, names being widely discussed include former Assistant General Secretary Babul Chowdhury and Sandwip Society President Firoz Ahmed.

The Ruhul-Jahid Panel, which was defeated by the Selim-Ali Panel in the previous election, has not yet confirmed whether it will participate in this year’s contest. However, speculation regarding their possible return remains strong within community circles.

Meanwhile, Jamaica Bangladesh Association General Secretary Rabbi Sayed has emerged as a new figure in the election race. He has already announced his candidacy for the post of general secretary, pledging to provide what he described as “leadership for change.”

Rabbi Sayed also called for greater participation from younger generations and ordinary members of the Bangladeshi-American community, emphasizing the need for fresh leadership and broader representation within the organization.

Following the formation of the election commission, membership enrollment and voter registration activities have already begun. The registration process is expected to continue until June 30.

Bangladeshis aged 18 and above living in the United States will be eligible to become members and register as voters by paying the required membership fee.

To obtain membership and voter eligibility, applicants must pay a two-year subscription fee of $20. Interested individuals can complete the process directly at the Bangladesh Society office or at designated temporary registration booths.

Leaders of Bangladesh Society Inc. have urged expatriate Bangladeshis to actively participate in what they described as an important democratic process for the community.

According to organizers, broad participation from community members will help ensure the election of a credible, inclusive, and effective leadership body capable of representing the interests of Bangladeshi expatriates over the next three years.
