Washington, May 28 (V7N)- US President Donald Trump has reportedly issued a strong warning regarding the Strait of Hormuz, saying that Washington would take “strong action” if Oman cooperates in collecting shipping tolls under a proposed arrangement linked to Iran, according to a report by Middle East Eye.

The remarks were made during a cabinet meeting on Wednesday (May 27), where Trump emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz is international waters and must remain open for global navigation.

He reportedly warned that if Oman does not act in line with broader international expectations, the United States would respond firmly. The statement has drawn attention due to its unusually strong language amid already rising tensions in the region.

The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy shipping routes, lies between Iran and Oman and handles a significant portion of global oil and gas transportation. Its narrowest point is about 21 nautical miles, making it strategically sensitive for international trade and security.

Iran has previously argued that in any post-conflict arrangement, shipping through the strait could involve service fees or toll mechanisms. However, international legal experts say such arrangements would require broader regional coordination.

Iran has long maintained influence over the strategic waterway, while Oman has traditionally played a diplomatic mediating role between Tehran and Washington. The country has also hosted several rounds of indirect talks between the two sides in recent years.

Oman’s Foreign Ministry has recently expressed criticism of escalating military actions in the region, while reaffirming its commitment to diplomacy and stability.

Analysts say tensions have increased amid broader geopolitical friction involving maritime security, sanctions, and ongoing negotiations over regional agreements.
