A powerful earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale rattled the North American country of Mexico on Sunday (May 12), with its epicenter located in the Guatemala-Mexico border area. The seismic event was reported by Reuters news agency.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake originated near the coast of Chiapas, Mexico, with its epicenter located 75 km below the Earth's surface. The tremors were felt across the region, causing widespread concern and damage to infrastructure in various areas, including Quetzaltenango and San Marcos on the Guatemala side of the border.

Guatemala's disaster agency reported significant damage to infrastructure, with reports of landslides along roads in affected areas. However, the Mexican Navy reassured the public, stating that there is no risk of a tsunami following the earthquake.

The earthquake serves as a stark reminder of the region's susceptibility to seismic activity and highlights the importance of preparedness and response measures in mitigating the impact of natural disasters.
