The Gaza Strip endured another night of intense violence as Israeli forces launched brutal attacks on multiple refugee camps, resulting in significant casualties. According to reports from Al Jazeera, at least 64 people were killed in these airstrikes on Saturday night, May 18.
The deadliest assault occurred in the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza, where at least 28 people, including many women and children, lost their lives. The overnight bombardment left numerous others trapped under the rubble, and the Palestinian Authority has expressed concerns that the death toll could rise as rescue operations continue.
In addition to the attack on Jabalia, Israeli forces struck the Nuseirat camp, killing 17 people. The southern regions of Rafah and Khan Yunis also faced severe bombings, contributing to the massive displacement of around 900,000 people in just the past week.
The violence persisted into Sunday morning, with another airstrike on the Nusirat refugee camp at approximately 6 am local time, resulting in 20 more fatalities. The victims' bodies were transported to Al-Aqsa Hospital in nearby Deir el-Balah. This followed a previous attack on the same camp on Saturday, which claimed five lives.
Since the escalation of conflict on October 7 last year, the Palestinian health authorities report that Israeli strikes have killed at least 35,386 people and injured 79,366 in Gaza. Conversely, Hamas attacks have resulted in the deaths of 1,139 people in Israel.
The ongoing conflict has led to severe humanitarian crises and widespread devastation in the Gaza Strip, exacerbating the suffering of civilians caught in the crossfire. The international community continues to call for an urgent ceasefire and a resolution to the conflict to prevent further loss of life.
