Cyclone Remal has wreaked havoc across West Bengal and four northeastern states of India, leading to the deaths of at least 32 people due to heavy rains and landslides. The Hindu reported on Wednesday that the cyclone's devastation spanned West Bengal, Assam, Nagaland, and Mizoram.

In West Bengal, the cyclone claimed seven lives. Among the tragic stories, a father lost his life after being struck by a piece of wood while searching for his son, who was stranded at a friend's house watching the IPL final. The father ventured out in the severe weather, determined to bring his son home, only to meet a fatal accident.

The northeastern states have also suffered significant losses:

  • Mizoram: The state experienced the highest death toll with 17 people killed due to a landslide at a stone quarry. Seven others are feared to be trapped under the rubble, complicating rescue efforts due to the continuous heavy rains.
  • Assam: Three people lost their lives as a result of the cyclone's impact.
  • Nagaland: Four fatalities were reported, adding to the region's woes.
  • Meghalaya: While specific numbers were not provided, the state also faced severe weather conditions and consequent fatalities.

Rescue operations are underway in the affected regions, but continuous rains and difficult terrain are hampering efforts. Authorities are working tirelessly to locate and rescue those still trapped and provide relief to the survivors.

The Indian Meteorological Department has been issuing warnings and updates to help prepare and protect the population, but the severity of Cyclone Remal has nonetheless led to substantial damage and loss of life.

Cyclone Remal has brought significant destruction to parts of India, particularly affecting West Bengal and the northeastern states. With 32 confirmed deaths and several individuals still missing, the full impact of the cyclone is yet to be fully assessed. Rescue and relief operations continue as authorities strive to mitigate the effects of this natural disaster and aid those affected by its wrath.
