New Delhi, 6 June 2024 - The swearing-in ceremony for Narendra Modi as the new Prime Minister of India has been postponed by a day and will now take place on Sunday evening. This change in schedule was confirmed by Indian media outlet NDTV. Originally planned for Saturday, the ceremony was delayed for unspecified reasons.
Narendra Modi was elected as the leader of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Wednesday, securing his position as Prime Minister for a third consecutive term, following in the footsteps of Jawaharlal Nehru.
Several international leaders have been invited to attend the ceremony. Confirmed attendees include Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe. Invitations have also been extended to Nepal's Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Bhutan's Tshering Tobgay.
Prior to the formation of the new government, Narendra Modi resigned from his position as Prime Minister and submitted his resignation letter to President Draupadi Murmu. This step was necessary to pave the way for the new government following the recent Lok Sabha election results.
The election results, announced last Tuesday, saw Modi's BJP win 240 seats, falling short of a majority in the Lok Sabha. However, the NDA coalition secured enough seats to form the government, ensuring Modi's continued leadership as Prime Minister.
