India has appointed Lt. Gen. Upendra Dwivedi as the new Army Chief, who will succeed General Manoj C Pandey on June 30. The appointment was reported by the Hindustan Times on Wednesday, June 12.

A government notification issued on Tuesday, June 11, confirmed Lt. Gen. Dwivedi's promotion to the position. Currently serving as the Vice Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Dwivedi was born on July 1, 1964, and was commissioned into the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, an infantry regiment of the Indian Army, in 1984.

Over his 40-year career, Lt. Gen. Dwivedi has held numerous key positions, including commanding the 18 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles Regiment, 26 Sector Assam Rifles Brigade, Assam Rifles (East), and serving as the 9 Corps Deputy Inspector General.

The current Army Chief, General Manoj Pandey, was originally set to retire at the end of May but had his term extended by one month. He has been serving as Army Chief since April 30, 2022.
