Tehran, June 29 2024 — The vote counting for Iran's 14th presidential election has concluded, revealing that none of the candidates secured more than 50% of the votes, necessitating a runoff between the top two contenders, Saeed Jalili and Masoud Pezeshkian. According to Iran International, the runoff election is scheduled for July 5.
Voting took place on Friday, ending at midnight local time across 58,640 centers in 482 cities. Iran's total voter count stands at approximately 60 million, with 24,535,185 votes cast, representing a turnout of about 40%. Additionally, more than one million votes were deemed invalid.
Here are the results for the leading candidates:
Masoud Pezeshkian: 14,159,991 votes
Saeed Jalili: 9,473,298 votes
Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf: 3,383,340 votes
Mustafa Pourmohammadi: 2,006,397 votes
With no candidate achieving a majority, reformist Masoud Pezeshkian and hardliner Saeed Jalili will face off in the runoff election.
This election was expedited due to the unexpected death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash on May 19, prompting an early presidential vote initially scheduled for June next year.
