London, 05 July 2024 — Rishi Sunak is no longer the Prime Minister of Britain. He officially abdicated his position to King Charles on Friday, as confirmed by Buckingham Palace.

A statement from Buckingham Palace detailed that Sunak met the King on Friday morning to formally resign as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury, a resignation that King Charles accepted. This significant moment was reported by CNN, noting that Sunak was accompanied by his wife, Akshata Murthy, as they left Buckingham Palace.

With Sunak's resignation, Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party, is set to meet with the King and officially take over as Prime Minister.

Sunak also announced his resignation as leader of the Conservative Party following a heavy electoral defeat. In his final speech at Downing Street, he stated, "I will step down as party leader after the results." This resignation initiates the process of electing a new leader for the Conservative Party.

As of the latest reports, 648 out of 650 constituencies have declared their results. The opposition Labour Party won a commanding 412 seats, while the ruling Conservative Party secured just 121 seats. Additionally, the Liberal Democrats won 71 seats, the SNP 9, SF 7, and independents and other parties won 28 seats. A total of 326 seats are required to form a government.

The electoral outcome saw Nigel Farage's Reform Party and the centrist Liberal Democrats splitting the vote for Sunak's party, forcing the Conservatives to the opposition benches in parliament. Many Conservative ministers lost their seats, and the party now faces the challenge of redefining its role as the opposition.
