Washington, D.C. 13 July– President Joe Biden sparked new frustration and anger among Democrats after a public gaffe where he confused Vice President Kamala Harris with his main rival, Donald Trump. The incident, which occurred on Thursday (July 11), followed a similar mistake earlier in the day when Biden mixed up Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
During an event, when asked about his confidence in Vice President Kamala Harris, Biden responded, "I would never have picked Trump as vice president unless I thought he was unfit to be president." The audience was stunned by the 81-year-old president's comment, questioning whether his memory is failing to the extent that he cannot recall his own vice president’s name and confuses Trump with Harris.
This latest slip has intensified concerns about Biden's ability to secure re-election. The incident occurred just two hours after another mistake at a NATO summit, where Biden quickly corrected himself after mistakenly referring to Zelensky as Putin.
In recent months, Biden has faced criticism for several high-profile errors. During a debate with Trump on June 27, Biden's performance was widely criticized, with many attributing his mistakes to his age. Although Biden promised to improve, his repeated gaffes have left many supporters disheartened and increasingly angry.
During a press conference at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, Biden appeared more confident but made another blunder, mistakenly referring to Vice President Kamala Harris as Donald Trump. He also misstated the US jobs report for June, claiming 2,000 jobs were created instead of the actual figure of 200,000.
Acknowledging his mistakes, Biden suggested he might need to adjust his work schedule, stating, "I have to go a little slower." He emphasized his busy schedule was meant to reassure Democrats and maintain their faith in him.
Despite growing pressure from within his party and from donors to step down, Biden remains determined to run for re-election. Some prominent donors, including Disney and Hollywood producer Lindelof, have threatened to withhold funding if Biden continues his campaign. Ari Emanuel, a key Democratic supporter, urged others to cut off financial support, emphasizing that funding is crucial for political campaigns.
As Biden faces mounting pressure to step aside, questions about his fitness to lead the United States persist. The Democratic Party is left grappling with the implications of these missteps as the 2024 election approaches.
