Tehran, 14 July — Iran's newly elected president, Masoud Pezheshkian, issued a strong message to the United States, emphasizing that Iran will not be coerced into any actions. In a statement titled "My Message to the New World," released on Saturday (July 13), Pezheshkian reiterated Iran's stance on not yielding to external pressures and clarified the country's defense strategy.
Pezheshkian stated, "I repeat to everyone, Iran does not and will not act under pressure, and the Iranian government's defense strategy does not include nuclear weapons." This clear declaration is intended to communicate Iran's resolve to maintain its sovereignty and strategic choices without succumbing to international pressure, particularly from the United States.
Highlighting the importance of international alliances, Pezheshkian acknowledged the support of China and Russia, especially during challenging times. "China and Russia have stood by us uninterruptedly in difficult times. This friendship is very precious to us," he said.
Pezheshkian emphasized the strategic significance of Russia, describing it as a "valuable strategic ally and neighbor of Iran." He expressed his administration's commitment to strengthening and expanding cooperative relations with Russia. Additionally, Pezheshkian conveyed Iran's support for international efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine.
Pezheshkian also expressed his desire to develop relations with neighboring countries and to establish diplomatic ties with European nations. Despite these intentions, many Iranians remain skeptical about his ability to fulfill his election promises due to the significant influence of Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Masoud Pezheshkian, a 69-year-old heart surgeon known for his reformist views, was elected as Iran's new president on July 5, defeating hardline conservative Saeed Jalili in a second round of voting. The early presidential election was necessitated by the death of former president Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash last May, in accordance with Iran's constitutional requirements.
As Iran navigates its future under Pezheshkian's leadership, the international community will be watching closely to see how his administration's policies and actions align with his statements and promises.
