Mogadishu, 15 July – At least eight people have been killed in a violent clash at the Central Prison in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu. The confrontation occurred as inmates, reportedly affiliated with militant groups, attempted to escape, resulting in the deaths of five prisoners and three members of the security forces, Al Jazeera reports.

Authorities detailed that the unrest began when a group of inmates launched an attack on prison security guards, seizing their weapons in a bid to flee the facility. Gunfire erupted as the prisoners engaged in a fierce battle with the guards. 8 dead (5 prisoners, 3 army personnel) Prisoners involved with militant groups initiated the escape attempt.

In response to the escalating violence, members of the Somali army were swiftly deployed to the prison. The soldiers confronted the inmates, resulting in a deadly exchange of gunfire that led to the casualties.

Five prisoners were killed by the responding soldiers.Three security personnel lost their lives during the confrontation.
