Pakistan's former Prime Minister Imran Khan has been serving time in various cases including Toshakhana irregularities since his ouster. This time, the court sentenced Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi to seven years in prison for marrying without complying with Sharia law. A court in Islamabad gave this verdict on Saturday (February 3).
According to the Pakistani media Dawn, in the case filed by Bushra Bibi's ex-husband Khair Farid Manekar, the court of Senior Civil Court Judge Qudratullah sentenced the couple to seven years in prison and fined the couple five lakh rupees. Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were present in the court when the verdict was announced.
Bushra's ex-husband alleged that Bushra Bibi married Imran Khan soon after breaking up with him. Which is against Shariah law.
Meanwhile, representatives of the country's civil society reacted sharply after the verdict was announced. Pakistani lawyer Reema Omar said, "This is a disgraceful stain on our justice system." Mentioning the matter as horrible, he said, how has the state come down to such a low position to insult husband and wife?
Abdul Moeez Jeffery, another lawyer, termed the judgment as a "joke" and highlighted the circus of the judicial system.
It should be noted that the country's court has sentenced former Prime Minister Imran Khan to 14 years in prison in the Toshakhana corruption case. He has also been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment in the state wire leak case. Earlier, the country's court sentenced him to three years imprisonment in another case of Toshakhana in August last year. This time he was sentenced to seven years in prison on charges of marriage against Sharia law.
