Jerusalem, August 28 — Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz has called for the temporary evacuation of Palestinians from the West Bank as part of an intensified anti-terror operation by the Israeli military. Katz made this appeal on Wednesday following last week's failed suicide attack in Tel Aviv, which was reportedly planned from the northern West Bank.
In a social media post on X (formerly known as Twitter), Katz stated, "We must deal with the threat of terrorism just as we are dealing with the infrastructure of terror in Gaza. This includes the temporary evacuation of Palestinian civilians and other necessary measures." The news was reported by the Israeli media outlet, Times of Israel.
Katz further described the Israeli military's ongoing anti-terror operations as "a war in any sense." The operations have so far resulted in the deaths of at least 10 Palestinians and the arrest of several others in various parts of the West Bank.
The Foreign Minister also emphasized that Israeli forces are focused on dismantling what he described as a "terrorist network" allegedly backed by Iran in areas like Jenin and Tulkarem in the West Bank. Katz claimed that Iran is attempting to establish terrorist fronts in the West Bank, similar to those in Lebanon and Gaza.
According to United Nations data, Palestinians have been ordered to evacuate from approximately 88.5 percent of the Gaza Strip since the conflict escalated following Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7. Nearly 1 million people were evacuated from Rafah in May alone.
The Israeli government has stated that these measures are essential for national security and to combat terrorism. However, the call for evacuations has drawn criticism from various international bodies and human rights organizations, who argue that such actions could exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in the region.
As the situation continues to develop, the international community is closely monitoring the Israeli military's operations and their implications for the stability of the region. Further updates are expected as both Israeli and Palestinian authorities respond to these evolving circumstances.
