West Bengal, September 01 — West Bengal is currently facing intense unrest following a series of shocking incidents that have outraged the public and led to daily protests across the state. The turmoil began with a scandal involving RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where a postgraduate trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered on August 9, prompting widespread condemnation and demands for justice.

The brutal crime at the state-run hospital in Kolkata has led to ongoing protests from students and political groups, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who are calling for accountability and immediate action against those responsible for security lapses. The tragic incident has raised serious concerns about safety measures in government hospitals.

In a separate incident, tensions were further inflamed over the weekend when a nurse at Ilambazar Health Centre in Birbhum district was allegedly molested by a patient while on duty. According to reports from Indian media, the incident occurred on Saturday night when a male patient, who had come to the health centre for treatment, inappropriately touched the nurse while she was administering saline in the emergency department. The nurse stated that the molestation occurred in the presence of the patient’s family members.

"The male patient misbehaved with me, and while I was performing my duties as directed by the doctor, he touched my private parts. When I pointed this out, he began verbally abusing me," the nurse recounted. She further emphasized the lack of adequate security at the health centre, stating, "These things happen because of a lack of security. Otherwise, how could a patient dare to behave in such a way with a duty nurse in front of his family members? The authorities do nothing to stop such behaviour."

The incident led to immediate outrage and a tense standoff at the health centre, prompting hospital authorities to call the police. A police team arrived promptly and arrested the accused patient, who is now facing legal action.

The molestation case comes just weeks after the discovery of the trainee doctor's body at RG Kar Medical College, an incident that has sparked daily demonstrations demanding justice. The gruesome crime has not only highlighted security failings but also revealed deeper issues of corruption within the hospital system. Accused Sanjay Roy, who has been linked to the murder, reportedly had unrestricted access to various parts of the hospital at all hours, raising questions about security protocols. Further investigations have suggested that Roy was involved in arranging hospital beds and facilities for patients in exchange for money, pointing to a possible corruption racket.

The ongoing protests and public anger reflect the urgent need for reforms in hospital management and security protocols. Both the state government and law enforcement agencies are under increasing pressure to ensure the safety of healthcare workers and patients, as well as to hold those responsible for these incidents accountable.

As West Bengal grapples with these crises, the government is expected to take swift action to address public concerns and restore confidence in the state's healthcare institutions.
