Imphal, Sep 10 (V7N)– The northeastern Indian state of Manipur is witnessing a fresh wave of unrest as attacks and clashes involving rebel groups have intensified. A series of incidents, including gunfire exchanges, bomb blasts, drone and missile attacks, and attempts to loot arms from the Manipur Rifles, have raised concerns for the central government.

In recent days, rebels have engaged in multiple rounds of gunfire, coupled with drone and missile attacks, causing civilian casualties. A significant attack occurred in the capital, Imphal, on Monday when Kuki rebels launched a drone strike on the village of Koturk, burning several vehicles and damaging infrastructure.

In a separate incident, rebels deployed long-range rockets targeting residential areas in Bishnupur, killing 78-year-old RK Rabie and injuring six others in a drone attack. Authorities believe the Kuki rebels, who have been operating from the nearby hilly regions, are behind the attacks.

There has also been an attempt to loot weapons from two battalions of the Manipur Rifles, adding to the escalating violence. Security forces have been deployed in large numbers to manage the situation, with orders to retaliate against the rebels.

The situation is further complicated by growing civilian unrest. Protests have erupted in Imphal, with students and locals demanding the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh, questioning the government's role in restoring peace. The protesters are calling for immediate action to address the violence and bring stability to the region.

Hatzalhai Haokip, representing a Kuki rights group, expressed frustration over the ongoing persecution of the Kuki community. "The state has been silent on the persecution of Kuki people in Manipur for over a year. We’ve informed the central government in Delhi, but nothing has changed. What’s happening in Manipur is deeply troubling," Haokip stated.

The central government is reportedly working to address the crisis, but the situation remains volatile as the region grapples with increasing violence and civil discontent.
