Dhaka, Mar 06 (V7N) – UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has emphasized that Bangladesh has the opportunity to present a story of optimism to the world, even amid difficult circumstances. Speaking at a discussion in Geneva, Switzerland, on Wednesday (March 5), he urged all stakeholders to seize the opportunity and cooperate fully to move forward.

The discussion centered on the UN Human Rights Fact-Finding Mission's report, which examined human rights violations and torture related to the July-August 2024 protests in Bangladesh.

The UN report, initially published on January 12, details serious human rights violations committed by the then Awami League government during the July-August 2024 student uprising. The report alleges that:

  • Protesters and their supporters were subjected to severe repression.
  • Crimes, including torture and abuse of power, were committed by government officials, law enforcement, and intelligence forces.
  • The crackdown was aimed at suppressing the movement and ensuring the Awami League government remained in power.

During the discussion, Volker Türk stressed the need for due process in judicial proceedings against those responsible for serious crimes.

The event also featured remarks from:

  • Professor Dr. Asif Nazrul, Advisor for Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs
  • Mahfuz Alam, Information Advisor

The discussion in Geneva is part of ongoing international scrutiny over Bangladesh’s human rights situation, with calls for justice and accountability for past abuses.
