Sept 27, V7N - Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone expressed satisfaction with his team's defensive display after a late 1-0 victory against Celta Vigo in LaLiga on Thursday. The win marked Atletico's impressive defensive record this season, having conceded just three goals in their first seven matches, solidifying their status as the league's best defensive side.
Simeone praised the team's defensive resilience, noting, "Today we took the three points with great defensive patience against opponents who haven't lost since February." However, he acknowledged the need for improvement in their attacking game, stating that while the defense performed well, they failed to create enough goal-scoring opportunities, particularly in the first half.
"The first half we performed well in defence but we didn't create opportunities to put our players in front of goal," he added. "There's a defensive performance that is much better; we still haven't found that area where we can play better offensively."
The Argentine manager highlighted the impact of substitutes Julian Alvarez, Angel Correa, and Rodrigo Riquelme, who energized the team in the second half. "In the second half, the substitutions made us better... Luckily, in the end, Griezmann and Julian found each other," he noted, referring to Alvarez's crucial goal that secured the three points.
Looking ahead, Atletico will face city rivals Real Madrid in a highly anticipated LaLiga clash on Sunday.
