Paris, Oct 17 (V7N) – As the 2024 Ballon d'Or gala approaches, football legend Lionel Messi has voiced his support for fellow Argentine Lautaro Martinez as a deserving contender for the prestigious award. The ceremony, which will take place on October 28 at the Theater du Chatelet in Paris, has stirred much anticipation, with several top football stars vying for the accolade.

Messi, the record-holder for the most Ballon d'Or wins with a total of eight, won the award last year after leading Argentina to a historic victory in the 2022 World Cup. However, after missing much of last season due to injury, Messi is no longer in contention this year. Instead, the Argentine star has thrown his weight behind Lautaro Martinez, whom he believes to be a top contender for the 2024 Ballon d'Or.

Martinez has enjoyed an exceptional year, both with his national team and club. The Argentine forward was pivotal in Argentina’s Copa America victory, where he secured the Golden Boot by scoring five goals, including one in the final. Additionally, Martinez helped his club Inter Milan to win the Italian Supercoppa, further solidifying his claim to the Ballon d'Or.

"Lautaro had a fantastic year," Messi remarked. "He scored in the final, was the top scorer in Copa America, and has proven himself to be a crucial player. He deserves the Ballon d'Or more than anyone else."

Argentina’s head coach, Lionel Scaloni, echoed Messi's sentiments, also backing Martinez for the Ballon d'Or. Scaloni praised Lautaro for his consistency and contributions, both with the national team and at the club level, stating, "Lautaro is the biggest claimant for the Ballon d'Or. He has been with us since the beginning, and a great future awaits him."

Despite Martinez’s remarkable year, he faces tough competition for the award. Brazilian winger Vinicius Jr. of Real Madrid is seen as a strong contender after an extraordinary season with his club, although his national team performances were less impactful. Other notable candidates include Manchester City's Rodri, as well as Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe, both of whom are also in the spotlight.

The football world eagerly awaits the results of the 2024 Ballon d'Or, as speculation continues to grow over who will take home the prestigious honor.
