Patrick Mahomes has expressed his desire to bring a WNBA expansion team to Kansas City, leveraging his influence and financial resources to make it a reality. He noted the recent success of the WNBA and said it would be a "no-brainer" for Kansas City, given the city's enthusiasm for basketball. Mahomes and his wife, Brittany, already support women's sports through their investment in the Kansas City Current of the National Women’s Soccer League. Mahomes, who also has ownership stakes in the MLB's Royals and MLS's Sporting Kansas City, envisions a future in sports ownership, particularly to inspire his daughter by showcasing women's sports.

Kansas City’s strong sports culture, bolstered by the legacy of the University of Kansas basketball, makes it a prime candidate for a WNBA team. The city also has the T-Mobile Center, an NBA- and NHL-ready arena that has yet to secure a permanent professional team. With the WNBA planning to expand from 12 to 15 teams, adding new franchises in San Francisco, Portland, and Toronto, Kansas City could be in line for the league’s 16th team, facing competition from nearby St. Louis and Philadelphia.

Mahomes emphasized that Kansas City’s fan base is known for filling stadiums, whether for Kansas basketball or Chiefs games, and he believes a WNBA team would receive similar support. He pointed to the success of the Current, which has drawn a dedicated fan base and is now playoff-bound, as an example of the city's enthusiasm for women's sports.

Collaborating with the Current’s ownership group, Mahomes aims to bring a WNBA team to Kansas City, drawing from their shared vision and success in launching the soccer team. With Mahomes at the forefront, the initiative could give Kansas City a strong bid to become part of the WNBA’s next chapter.
