The new three-on-three women’s basketball league, Unrivaled, is gearing up for its first season with some exciting developments. Originally set to have 30 players, the league announced Thursday that it will expand to 36 players for its debut season, forming six teams of six players each. Co-founder and WNBA star Napheesa Collier shared the news in a social media video, explaining that the expansion was made possible by exceeding financial projections, allowing the league to create more roster spots earlier than planned. Indiana Fever center and 2023 WNBA Rookie of the Year, Aliyah Boston, was announced as the league’s 30th signing.
Collier, along with New York Liberty’s Breanna Stewart, established Unrivaled to offer players a lucrative alternative to playing overseas during the WNBA offseason. The eight-week season, scheduled for the WNBA's break, will also allow players to earn equity in the league, adding to the appeal. Boston, who was the first overall pick in the 2023 WNBA Draft, has quickly become a star, averaging 14.2 points, 8.6 rebounds, and notable defensive stats over her first two seasons with the Fever.
Alongside Boston, Unrivaled has attracted high-profile talents like Angel Reese, Jewell Loyd, and Arike Ogunbowale. The league is also setting its sights on signing Caitlin Clark from the Fever, with reports suggesting an offer exceeding $1 million per season. Unrivaled is already generating excitement as it looks to make a strong impact on women’s sports by giving top players a new platform and greater financial opportunities.
